Oral History Program Assistant

The 1947 Partition Archive is now accepting applications for our internships program. We seek bright and enthusiastic interns interested in gaining field experience. We currently have positions available in several fields, one of which is listed below. Applicants should be serious, highly motivated and have the necessary experience as listed below. Interns will be paired with an experienced mentor in their area of concentration.

At present, we only offer unpaid volunteer internships, intended for the applicant to gain field experience. Interns are encouraged to seek course credit through their colleges or universities.

Interns will receive relevant training, fieldwork experience as well as a guaranteed reference. References will only be provided to those who satisfactorily complete their internship term. Experience or knowledge in South Asian studies is not necessary, however we do require some task specific experience for certain positions.

Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: o Develop or improve your administratve skills to help a budding nonprofit grow! o Assist with archiving oral history interviews, which are core to The 1947 Partition Archive o Conduct at least two oral history interviews with Partition witnesses during tenure as intern (training provided). ADDITIONAL POSITION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: 1. Story Processing/Archivist: o Provide detailed attention to each story and associated archival data o Communicate with remote team in South Asia o Review each story submission as it arrives o Assist Archivist in managing oral history systems & databases o Handle materials for interviewers; contact interviewers for missing materials o Partake in the Oral History Review Board: * Organize and execute oral history review program * Manage reviewers and reviews * Develop and iterate review criteria * Provide feedback and maintain review logs 2. Constituency Communications: o Communicate with interviewees; scheduling, answering questions, etc. o Manage communications with interviewers o Ability to write professional and comprehensive emails o Learn to identify, manage and attend to constituency needs through clear communication o Maintain regular communications with global volunteers o Manage spreadsheets o Assist in developing and managing database that feeds the story map online: http://www.1947PartitionArchive.org/browse

Job Requirements

o Strong communication and writing skills o Experience working with databases o Previous administrative experience preferred but not required o Strong passion for preserving history and supporting our mission o For Archivist position: Previous library or other archive experience a plus, but not required.

Internship Time Period – 6 months or 2 months

SIX MONTH POSITION: Position starts immediately. Intern needs to commit a minimum of 10 hours each week. Minimum 6 months commitment. TWO MONTH POSITION: This position starts in May or June 2016 and the intern is expected to commit 30 hours a week for 8 weeks.

Internship Expectations

Interns are expected to develop ownership of their projects and encouraged to develop creative solutions. Intern must have a strong passion for and dedication to our mission and goals. Interns will receive relevant training, fieldwork experience as well as guaranteed references for those who complete their internship term. Successful interns, at the end of their tenure, will be considered for any paid positions that may be available. This internship is unpaid but interns may apply for credit or funding through their college or university. For this position, you will learn to communicate with diverse constituencies and learn how a nonprofit startup functions. All interns will be working from our downtown Berkeley office.
