Title: Editorial Community Coordinator

Public News Service is a national public interest newswire. We find, report and distribute stories that need to be told, often from marginalized voices. Our print and broadcast stories, and newscasts are picked up by local media outlets across the country. Reaching far beyond the traditional news bubble, more than 7 million people a day hear or read these stories through a network of 37 state news services.
We are seeking a part-time (10 – 12 hours/week) editorial coordinator and newshound to ensure PNS coverage of the communities working on specific issues and topics. This position is part organizer and part communications director, it requires a mission-driven individual with intense curiosity, very broad knowledge of current events, and a brain that makes creative connections between events of the day and underlying systems. The right person loves sharing access to information, and is as passionate about justice in all forms as they are compassionate and diplomatic.
Major Areas of Responsibility & Duties
Liaise with PNS journalists to ensure coverage of our funded beats (primarily from grants and memberships)
Establish and maintain relationships with supporters, funders and community newsmakers to maximize those relationships
Determine editorial priorities for stories relevant to our various communities
Successful candidates will have:
3 – 5 years of work experience demonstrating success at the intersection of community organizing and successful communications with news media
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills on wide range of platforms
Priority will be given to candidates with proven experience successfully representing organizations or causes; and building relationships with journalists
Experience working within a virtual team
Excellent computer skills
Compensation Initially, this is a part-time (10 – 12 hours’ week) virtual/remote contract position paying $12,500 annually. Growth potential for additional hours and responsibilities for the right person.
