Director, Strategic Development, U.S.

About the role

This position is an integral part of Kiva’s overall revenue strategy and long-term sustainability. The Director of Strategic Development will be responsible for managing and expanding fundraising partnerships with foundations and corporations. In this role, you will work closely with senior leaders of the Kiva U.S. program to understand and map program strategies to the funding landscape and provide critical feedback to the program team. This position will report directly to the VP of Strategic Development.

Responsibilities / Tasks

  • Own an annual revenue goal of $1.5mm
  • Manage and develop a pipeline of 50+ prospects with progressive speed and predictability
  • Independently manage the full business development cycle from creating and customizing pitch materials, to pitching concepts, formalizing proposals, and negotiating and closing contracts
  • Serve as the relationship manager and first point of contact for your partner portfolio through post-sales engagement including internal and external  communications, timely and high quality reporting, and ongoing stewardship
  • Lead proposal development and creation of pitch decks and concept strategy documents for prospective philanthropic partners
  • Collaborate with teams across Kiva in order to coordinate major funding opportunities including Senior Program Leads, Product and Engineering, Legal, Finance, Impact Investments, Marketing and Communications
  • Manage multiple stakeholders’ requests and drive deliverables on an accelerated timeline
  • Represent Kiva at conferences and events including speaking opportunities
  • Maintain excellent knowledge management hygiene and detailed records using Salesforce, G Suite, Confluence, and other relevant internal systems
  • Other duties as necessary

Skills / Qualifications / Experience


  • Minimum 8-10 years work experience in fast-paced, growth-oriented organization(s), specifically in a non-profit development role or for-profit sales experience, with significant portion of past portfolio(s) including working with foundations and corporations and local city governments
  • Minimum 5 years working in U.S. community and economic development, U.S. microfinance
  • Demonstrated track record of securing six-figure grants and donations from foundations and corporations as primary development lead
  • Experience with C-level partnerships including heads of foundations, Mayor’s Offices, heads of CSR, and Senior Program Officers
  • Deep interest and/or experience in financial inclusion and capable of speaking articulately about economic development and microfinance with funders, including a strong understanding of Kiva’s role and paths for growth
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, excellent listening skills, and high EQ
  • Adept at PowerPoint, Word and Excel and Google equivalents
  • Skill and comfort manipulating data to support arguments and decision making
  • High energy and experience managing multiple projects and stakeholder demands simultaneously
  • Capable of producing written documents and pitch decks with a very fast turnaround, in a way that reflects a clear understanding of funder goals and how those intersect with new initiatives at Kiva
  • Must be independent and trustworthy to take on and manage relationships, while also being a team player and communicative with a broad set of stakeholders
  • Must be results-oriented, detail-oriented, extremely organized, and able to multi-task; ability to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously and take initiative
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States


  • MBA or Masters in Public Policy or other relevant area of study
  • Experience with Enterprise Sales
  • Experience working in fintech, “tech for good” or other technology related environments
  • Track record of securing seven-figure grants
  • Experience working with business intelligence software, particularly Looker
