Head of Engineering

At MindRight, we provide proactive mental health coaching to youth over text message. We’re a startup tech nonprofit with the mission of empowering youth of color to heal from trauma from systemic oppression. Our volunteer coaches support teens via text over our web app. In the next year, we’re growing to serve more students and cities. We’re also building our data reporting products to enable systems change in school districts and city agencies.

As we enter into our second year as a startup tech nonprofit, we’re looking for someone to take the lead on our technology strategy and technical team. We’re looking for someone with experience in product management, data analytics and visualization, machine learning, and UI design. We’re looking for someone who would start hands on by building a data reporting dashboard, working together with our lead developer. As Head of Engineering, you would continue building our data reporting dashboards, lead application of machine learning and natural language processing algorithms into our platform, lead our long-term technology strategy, and build our technical team of staff and volunteers.

Engineering Needs

  • Design and build interactive data reporting dashboards for school partners and internal admin web app users. Data reporting will be used to understand trends in student needs and to track student engagement, coach performance, and the impact of our supports.

  • Apply machine learning, natural language processing, and sentiment analysis algorithms into our web app to support our coaches as they text in real-time.

  • The dashboard will be integrated into our current web app, which is built on a MEAN stack of JavaScript, MongoDB, Angular, React, and Express.js. Texting is conducted using Twilio and all texting data is stored.

Management Needs

  • Based in Washington, DC

  • Decide on impact and quality metrics to focus on in collaboration with leadership team

  • Come up with an interview/hiring process to vet new potential hires and volunteers

  • Create a framework to incentivize and motivate junior developers to keep improving

  • Come up with workflow for code maintenance and code quality

  • Analyze user feedback and interaction data together with leadership team to decide on new product features and roadmaps

  • Provide HYPER realistic timelines and recommendations on development approach based on our financial situation

  • Evaluate performance of technical team members
