OpenAQ, the leading global open source platform for air quality data, is looking for a thoughtful, creative and experienced senior engineer and project manager to join our team as a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and help us continue our period of growth. This individual will lead the future development and execution of the technical growth and innovation strategy for OpenAQ, and also serve as a lead technical advisor in partnership with our team, 1000+ person (and growing) global community, and a diverse and growing group of NGO, government and private sector collaborators.
As CTO, you will be working closely with our Platform Lead and responsible for the evolution, development, and delivery of our core platform and architecture. You have a track record in being able to directly deploy, maintain, and upgrade production environments in a high traffic, high growth and agile environment (we currently have an average of 35 Million data requests via our API a month).
You will have deep developer experience, ideally working in an open source development environment with emerging technologies, with the ability to anticipate and incorporate relevant developments into our technical roadmap, including the creation of platform tools and API extensions. As you will be the senior technical advisor on a number of external-facing projects, you will be comfortable training, sharing and collaborating with a diverse group of stakeholders (grassroots and grasstops), across multiple time zones and cultures.
We are looking for a technical leader who is passionate about our mission to use open data to fight air inequality and our vision to increase coverage of and access to air quality data to a larger number of communities and stakeholders, and especially marginalized communities in the US and Global South who are often most affected by air pollution. To achieve that, you have a strategic and thoughtful “systems thinking” worldview and maturity, and you are also excited by the challenge to be a true player-coach, a servant leader and mentor, who will serve as a hands-on developer as part of a small, diverse, fun-loving, fully remote distributed team that is currently 3 people (you will be the 4th).
You are someone who embraces OpenAQ’s open-source inspired, human-friendly culture of radical transparency in how we work and communicate, and who celebrates getting things done for our organization over title and position. You are also someone who brings professional, personal, and/or lived perspective/experience as it relates to issues of Environmental Justice, and specifically the intersection of issues around equity, diversity, the environment and how air pollution and other negative environmental impacts disproportionately affect marginalized peoples (e.g. black, brown and indigenous communities and communities in the Global South).
