In the United States, more than $13 billion in SNAP benefits (food stamps) go unclaimed each year because potential recipients don’t realize they are eligible for the program or have difficulty applying. mRelief has just launched an end-to-end enrollment process in San Francisco and Yolo counties that allows users to complete a quick, 10-minute application, schedule an interview within two days of applying, and determine the documents they need to submit to be approved.
We are looking for volunteers to help us reach out to potential applicants who are eligible for the program. This position involves calling users to inform them of their eligibility and completing applications over the phone. Potential applicants could include low-income seniors, single parents, college students and individuals experiencing homelessness.
Volunteers will be able to directly impact the ability of food-insecure families to put food on the table and will see how civic technology can be deployed to facilitate access to social services. Volunteer shifts will be 3 hours a week at mRelief’s office in the Loop. We will provide training, support, and snacks. This is an unpaid position.
