Crisis Text Line is a nonprofit which provides free 24/7 access to crisis support via text message. We are looking for a Research Program Manager to oversee our many external research collaborations. Past collaborations and more details about the program can be found here. With 12 already in-flight projects and more to come, this is a truly exciting cross-functional role at Crisis Text Line working with external research teams, data, engineering, product, supervision, coaching, communications, and more.
The primary goals of our research collaborations are to (1) publish peer-reviewed research papers to increase public awareness and understanding of mental health and crisis, (2) advance research in the fields of mental health, computational linguistics, and machine learning, and (3) develop insights and products that can be used by community stakeholders across the crisis space.
Locations: New York, Seattle, SF Bay Area, Denver or Durham.
Organization and Project Management
Track the status of 12+ active research projects, each spanning 6-18 months.
Run the recruitment and selection process for prospective research teams, including outreach, responding to inquiries, engaging internal stakeholders in an application review process, and keeping researchers informed of their status.
Collaborate with research partners to (1) define and iterate on research goals and data needs and (2) identify a community partner who could benefit from the research.
Design and run the researcher onboarding process, including working with data and engineering teams to provide researchers with secure access to anonymized data, assigning internal user subject matter experts and data experts as needed, and facilitating researchers going through the CTL volunteer training.
Lead regular touchpoint meetings with researchers and stakeholders, and help to clear roadblocks where needed.
Design an annual internal evaluation of research projects: how can we improve outcomes through better selection of teams, stakeholder engagement, community partners, etc?
Communications and PR
Communicate active projects and key findings both internally and externally (e.g., staff, volunteers, partners, media, etc.)
Flag valuable insights for product team and help to scope work to move onto product roadmap
Work with communications team to write / edit CTL blog posts and social media posts highlighting research
Attend conferences to share insights and recruit prospective researchers
Other skills (preferred but not required)
Crisis Text Line user/product knowledge or mental health expertise
Basic SQL/python skills helpful (but can learn on the job)
Experience using data visualization software like Periscope, Looker, or Tableau
