Company Description:

Pie for Providers is an open-source, non-profit project focused on supporting childcare providers and the families who rely on them. Our work was incubated at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and has been nationally recognized by organizations like OpenIDEO and Promise Venture Studio.

Pie for Providers helps small child care providers and families claim the government funding for which they are already eligible. Today, 85% of eligible children do not claim this funding. This means families struggle to afford care and child care providers – small, women-owned businesses – do not get paid for their work. The COVID-19 crisis threatens to wipe out up to half of child care businesses, making this project even more urgent. We’re building a Rails and React app to help child care providers claim and manage their government subsidy funding.

Position Description: We are hiring volunteer software engineers to play a crucial role in building our core product. This is an opportunity to help build a product from the ground up and have a positive social impact at the intersection of civic technology, early care & education and economic development.

Responsibilities include:

Work with an agile team to develop, test, and maintain key features of the Pie for Providers’ Rails and React web app

Analyze and resolve technical and application problems

Package and support deployment of releases

Work closely with design team to implement designs

Qualifications and Requirements:

Experience with React and/or Rails

Highly self-directed and independently motivated

Your commitment:

4-12 hours a week for at least 4 months

Joining occasional (30 minutes, weekly, maximum) calls over Zoom with the CTO

Communicating via our team Slack and tracking your work via Github issues.
