About the role:

As the first design hire at UPchieve, you’ll get to be the primary creative force behind the look and feel of our brand and application. We’re looking for a unicorn: someone with an equal passion for UI/UX and graphic design. As our only designer, you’ll work closely with every area of the organization—from marketing to programs and product—to help ensure a cohesive visual experience. Eventually, you’ll have the opportunity to specialize in your role at UPchieve and even help hire and manage other designers, if that’s of interest to you.

This might be the right job for you if…

  • You’re super excited by the idea of working at an early stage edtech nonprofit (one of only two edtech nonprofits to have ever been backed by Y Combinator!)
  • You’re up for the challenge of designing a highly inclusive application and creating illustrations that both accurately represent and appeal to our student population
  • You want to have ownership of anything and everything related to the aesthetic of UPchieve
  • You’re willing and capable of being a one-person design team—taking on any and all design-related tasks until we’re able to grow the team

What you’ll do

  • Work with the marketing team to create beautiful email campaigns, social media graphics, and illustrations for our marketing website
  • Work with the program team to create compelling presentations, flyers, videos, and training materials
  • Work with the philanthropy team to design our annual report, impact case studies, and physical UPchieve swag
  • Conduct research (including user interviews, focus groups, and surveys) to learn more about our users and stakeholders
  • Work with the product/engineering team to design new features and improve the UI/UX of our existing application

The ideal candidate for this role…

  • Has a portfolio of design work that includes both illustrations and UI/UX design
  • Is highly empathetic and can put users at ease during interviews/research
  • Enjoys learning and trying new things (as we may be asking you to do types of design work that you’ve never done before)
  • Feels comfortable creating illustrations that represent our diverse student population, including Black and Brown youth

Additional application materials:

  • Some form of design samples (e.g., link to personal website/portfolio, Behance profile, etc.)

To apply, please email the following to recruitment@upchieve.org (and make sure to tell us what role you’re applying for!):

  • Some form of employment history (e.g., resume, LinkedIn profile, AngelList profile, etc.)

  • One paragraph (max 6 sentences) in the body of your email on what most excited you about this job. Why are you applying?

  • Any role-specific application materials requested above
