Using the Balinese language as a model for other local languages, BASAbali is creating a new way for local and international communities to think about and engage in strengthening local languages through a cultural local language wiki. Developed by a diverse group of linguists, community leaders, artists, social media enthusiasts and wiki developers from within and outside of Bali, the wiki crowdsources, stores, and shares knowledge of the Balinese language and inspires people to take action. The wiki has grown to over ¼ million users with thousands of submissions of local language text, videos, and photographs and is strengthening the co-existence and mutual respect of local, national and international languages. We now hope to go beyond Bali to other local language communities.
