ContentMine began when Peter Murray-Rust, a scientist and advocate for open science, sought to use a UK copyright exception to mine the scientific literature as a form of new research. The Shuttleworth Foundation believed that Peter could change the world, so they funded him since 2014 as a Shuttleworth Fellow to lead the ContentMine project, to demonstrate the usefulness of content mining and to provide tools and services to others. Content mining (also called text and data mining) means processing information in search of new information. To start content mining, some source material is required.
